Abstract
Once considered a frivolous notion relegated to the pages of science fiction, humanoid robots research is being funded by government agencies and industry, and is expected to play a significant role in many areas of society in the 21st century. Dr. Lisa Nocks (IEEE History Center), historian of science, technology and culture, and author of "The Robot: The Life Story of a Technology" describes the fascinating ways in which this solution to the problem of labor has persisted from antiquity to the present.
