Abstract
Beginning with the early 1900's, Dr. Daniel P. Greenfield analyses the medical, legal, economic, political, organizational, societal and technological influences that lead to the increasing number of specialties and specialists within medicine and surgery, including the most recent impact of managed care. He also considers the taxonomies that categorize the specialties by organ system, pathogen, treatment technique, signs and symptoms, among others.
