A visual approach to critical thinking
Abstract
For an Introduction to Critical Thinking course, students were assigned a visual portfolio project that combined visual media, blogs, and critical thinking and reflection. Writing is a creative process of discovery through language. This presentation shows how by having students create image-based writing portfolios and blog about them, they jump start this creative process and then they are able to freely experiment and express what needs expressing in their own personal lives. The project uses both portfolios and blogs in a new way. Both students and instructors can get excited about this project, as it allows the students to express themselves in a variety of ways and explore who they really are. They created blogs using free software and then found and compiled images and coupled them with reflections in an e-portfolio. They further reflected on the images and the experience in a blog. Their work is collected in one place, and they can witness their own development as individuals while it is occurring. This visual-thinking approach can be used in other courses and in other academic disciplines. It can be used to create inter-disciplinary dialogue and at the same time generate writing in content areas that don't normally use writing.
