Abstract
Formerly called rare-earth elements, the lanthanides are neither rare in abundance nor, strictly speaking, are they "earth." Segments in this program include Exploring the Lanthanide Series (properties of the lanthanides); Lanthanum: Movie Magic (how lanthanum gives moviegoers a glimpse of a different world); Neodymium: Magnetic Money (how magnets made of neodymium help safeguard money against counterfeiters); Europium: Seeing Red (how europium makes television viewers see red); and Superlaser (the use of lasers in operating rooms, factories, and the military). A Discovery Channel Production.
