Abstract
Queen Elizabeth herself is said to have requested the return of Falstaff to the Bard's stage...supposedly she wanted to see him in love. What Shakespeare gave Her Majesty instead was Falstaff's attempt to recoup his fortunes by seducing two respectable wives of affluent Windsor husbands. This most amiable play depicts the sturdy middle class rarely found among Shakespeare's milieu of aristocrats. This program views The Merry Wives of Windsor as Shakespeare’s attack on middle class propriety and hypocrisy. He challenges the belief that fidelity is mere lip service and a result of arranged, loveless marriages. Starring Ben Kingsley, known for his academy award performance in Ghandi, here as a jealous husband. Richard Griffiths is Falstaff.
