Abstract
Shakespeare's earliest attempt at romantic comedy, two friends, Valentine and Proteus, fall in love with Silvia, daughter of the Duke of Milan, who is promised to the foolish coward Thurio. Proteus forgets his old love, Julia, and thwarts Valentine's plan to elope with Silvia. Valentine is banished. Silvia follows with her page, who is Julia in disguise. They all meet in the forest. After a confrontation, the Duke eventually allows Valentine and Silvia to wed, and Proteus marries Julia.
