Music management seminar with Steve Leeds and Bill Werde: Editor in chief - Billboard magazine
Abstract
Bill Werde of Billboard Magazine discusses his first job at College Media Journal, his subsequent transition to writing about music business and technology as a freelance journalist, and his ensuing role as associate editor at Rolling Stone magazine. Then he addresses his move to Billboard magazine, the nature of a trade magazine, the role Billboard has traditionally played between record labels and music retailers, the reason why Billboard still reviews new music, Billboard’s competitive advantage in the marketplace, Billboard’s ownership situation, and how Billboard stays on the cutting edge. Other topics include the future business propositions of recorded music, the effect of digital music on shared human experiences, contemporary ways to track an artist’s popularity, Jennifer Lopez leaving a major record label, one-way deals, American Idol, and Billboard mobile applications.
