Abstract
Research over the past three years at the University of Michigan shows that, while students with a laptop are more likely to increase their time on tasks unrelated to the conduct of the course, they report being more attentive, significantly more engaged, and able to learn more with the technology than in similar classes without. These results suggest that "deliberate engagement" as opposed to passive allowance of laptops in the classroom can lead to improved attentiveness and engagement, even in larger classes. This presentation invites participants to bring their laptops to learn first-hand the tool LectureTools and strategies that have yielded such dramatic changes in class. Lessons learned are presented with an opportunity for participants to both play the role of student and create their own test course for their own institutions.
