E-readers and e-books: the good, the bad, and the ugly
Abstract
This session discusses two projects using e-readers at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a project using e-books at Berkeley College. The use of e-readers and e-books for textbooks has been a "hot topic" in higher education in 2010, following pilots at several universities using the Amazon Kindle or Sony Reader. This session discusses Berkeley College’s use of e-books in its classes, and some of the successes and challenges that have been met. Then two pilot programs using three different e-readers (Amazon Kindle, Sony Readers, and iPod Touches running the Kindle app) at Fairleigh Dickinson University are described. This session shows some of the advantages of e-texts and e-readers, and also honestly discusses some of the shortcomings and areas where further development is needed. Data from student and faculty surveys is presented. The speakers also discuss some of the technological changes that they believe will need to occur before e-readers and e-books are ready for wide-scale adoption at colleges and universities.
