Abstract
This presentation describes implementation of The iNurse Initiative. The Initiative includes use of iPod touch and iPad for: point of care access to nursing references, learner response system, procedure tracking, learning management system access and use of a digital stethoscope in the clinical area to facilitate learning. Summary Statement: This presentation reviews influences on implementation of expanded use of technology in nursing education and the evolution of the expanded use of technology resulting in the iNurse Initiative at New Jersey City University. Description of activity, project, or solution: Many nursing education programs have reviewed and are committed to implementing the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine, the National League for Nursing, the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Initiative and the Technology Informatics Guiding Educational Reform (TIGER) Initiative which call for incorporating information technology into the nursing curriculum. Outcome: Outcome data includes results of a nursing program graduate technology survey assessing graduate use of the technology provided in their nursing education program. Challenges -- including costs, coordination with the University IT department, device and application technical support, and the transition from the Windows Mobile to iOS platform -- are presented. Importance or relevance to other institutions: The incentive for implementation in expanding technology use in nursing education can be overwhelming. This presentation provides a means to implement a method of meeting this need without “reinventing the wheel” to meet this need.
