Abstract
Marine sediments are enormously important economically. Gravel and sand are obtained from the ocean for use as construction materials. In addition to offshore diamond deposits, tin and titanium are found in the ocean. Oil and natural gas resources are also generated from marine sediments, although extraction of these valuable commodities is expensive and difficult. Among the most intriguing deep-sea deposits are manganese nodules. While these are not yet economically significant, they may potentially be a major source of copper, nickel and cobalt.
