Abstract
Extremely high temperatures are needed to decompose the most persistent, harmful, and even radioactive materials. One solution is the Plasma Arc Torch, which achieves the highest temperatures yet attained for the thermal destruction of waste. The plasma arc requires enormous amounts of electricity and, due to the composition of the typical waste stream, the volume reduction is not as significant as other methods. However, the intense temperatures at which it functions, and the crystaline, obsidian-like slag it produces, make it appropriate for certain difficult wastes.
