Abstract
Biological treatment is a major application of microbial technology used for treating municipal wastewater and sewage. One of the most important biological treatment processes is anaerobic digestion, in which anaerobic bacteria are placed in huge cylindrical tanks called digesters. These bacteria then go to work decomposing organic solids, stabilizing them, and reducing the pathogen content along the way. One of the most efficient examples of biological treatment technology is the Activated Sludge Process, in which a wide variety of aerobic microbes are combined with primary treated wastewater in an aeration tank in order to aerobically digest organic wastes.
