While the term 'biological treatment' traditionally refers to sewage and wastewater facilities, a newer science known as bioremediation broadens the use of living organisms to concentrate or decompose contaminants. The goal of bioremediation is to engineer the balance of oxygen, microbes and contaminant so that bacteria will metabolize the contaminant efficiently. The 1300 miles of oil- covered Alaskan coastline resulting from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was the site of what remains the largest bioremediation effort ever undertaken.
