Abstract
While traditional bioremediation can degrade most organic elements, a newer process called co-metabolism is required for certain chemical contaminants, such as synthetic organics, pesticides and detergents. The key to successful co-metabolism is characterizing the hydrogeology of the site in question. If the depth, concentration and solubility of the plume are known, a system can be designed to efficiently mix the substrate, contaminant and oxygen underground.
