Abstract
Oil production typically starts with exploration that uses seismology and drilling to locate geological formations that contain oil. To access an oil reservoir, a drilling platform is placed over the site. At the bottom of the rotating drill pipe lies the heart of the rig: a tough, revolving bit made of tempered steel and diamond. As the bit grinds its way downward, additional sections of pipe are added until the bore-hole reaches the oil bearing formation. Wells can be drilled to depths of three miles using this method.
