Abstract
The valuable mineral borax was discovered in California's Death Valley in 1882. Today, fifty percent of the world's commercially produced borax comes from the Mojave Desert near Boron, California. Borates are used in hundreds of products and play an important part in the production of everything from glass, cookware, medicines and detergents, to agricultural products and ceramic glazes. The primary environmental concern is dust control, which is addressed most commonly through the use of water trucks which keep the ground slightly damp.
