Abstract
The processes of electroplating, anodizing and galvanizing produce several different wastestreams, including contaminated wastewaters, metallic sludges, and air emissions. In most plating shops, the bulk of the waste comes in the form of wastewater produced from processing and rinsing operations. In order to meet permitted sewer discharge levels, wastewater containing chemicals, such as cyanide and chromate, must go through an oxidation process before being precipitated. The precipitation process causes the heavy metals to be separated from the liquid, which is then able to meet water quality standards and can be discharged into the sewer system. The heavy metal precipitates form a sludge-like consistency, which then generates a solid filter cake once most of the water is removed. The predominant form of disposal for these filter cakes is in a certified, hazardous waste landfill. However, some plating facilities have found ways to recycle their solid waste. In addition, many plating facilities have gone to a counter-current rinse system to minimize the amount of water that's used.
