Abstract
Because electronics manufacturing is set in sterile surroundings and requires the use of delicate components, it may be hard to imagine that is has global environmental consequences. But the industry's dependence on chlorofluorocarbons, or CFC's, is one reason that those consequences are very real. In 1987, a committee of over three hundred international scientists concluded that depletion of the ozone layer could be linked to the presence of chlorinated compounds. One of the replacements scientists found for these compounds is isopropyl alcohol. Once this was accepted as a solvent substitute, a new waste treatment strategy needed to be found.
