Abstract
For decades, workers in the auto body industry were exposed to hazardous emissions, and pollutants were leached into the air. As a result, auto paint manufacturers resolved to develop more environmentally friendly paints. Today's auto paints are generally high solid, urethane-based paints. They use heat to set off the chemical reaction within the paint necessary to achieve durability against the sun's ultra-violet rays. Some of the regulations the Environmental Protection Agency has put in place in recent years require that auto body shops measure the volatile organic compounds (VOC's) emitted into the atmosphere on a daily basis.
