Abstract
The dangers of lead-based paints were essentially unknown to the public until the 1970's. At that time, over four million children were found to have elevated levels of lead in their blood as a result of breathing dust from deteriorating lead-based paint. This has been proven to cause hearing problems, behavioral or learning disabilities, or damage to the nervous system. In 1978, the federal government banned the use of lead in house paint. Government and industry then began looking for ways to create healthier alternatives for architectural and home coatings. This led to the development of low-VOC paints.
