Abstract
The ongoing maintenance of equipment and machines essential to the sugar production process can generate waste streams that require treatment. For example, some petroleum-based solvents leach hazardous metals, like chrome or lead, out of equipment parts. Every batch of spent solvent is tested; if hazardous, it is appropriately disposed of. If not, the solvent is distilled and recycled. This alone reduces hazardous solvent waste by thousands of pounds per year.
