Abstract
In measuring the health of a group of people two statistics are most often cited: life expectancy and infant mortality. Life expectancy is a prediction of how long a person is likely to live. The life span of an average American in 1900 was just over 40 years of age; today it is close to 80. These gains are rarely achieved in developing countries where infectious diseases, smoking-related illnesses, and overpopulation threaten the health of their citizens.
