Abstract
Suraj Achar had only recently opened his family practice when he left for a six-months assignment with a Doctors Without Borders nutrition-based team in Kenya. The incidence of malnutrition among Somalian refugees, particularly the children, was alarming. Dr. Achar tells the story of Annis, a tiny 2 1/2 year old who weighed only 4.2 kilos (9.24 pounds). Her mother was feeding her rations to her other children, so sure was she that Annis would not survive.
