Abstract
Impaired cognitive functioning, memory loss, or delusions may be caused by brain injuries, tumors, or the aging process as in Alzheimer's disease. One form of dementia is the thought disorder schizophrenia. The causes of schizophrenia are unknown, but the brains of people with this disorder tend to have defects that many experts think are inherited. New scanning techniques that supplement clinical observation assist psychiatrists in treating patients with anti-psychotic medications that allow them to live almost normal lives.
