Abstract
Historically violence within an intimate relationship was considered a private matter. Women could find little help from the justice system. But in 1985, in a landmark ruling, the federal district course reversed early rulings stating that "a man is not allowed to abuse or endanger a woman merely because he is her husband." Today police officers must document and assist in such incidents.
