Abstract
At 2 and 3 years of age, Scotty and Chris Merten--short, physically weak, and severely retarded--were referred to Dr. Edward McCabe. As he and his associates were to learn, the two brothers had a rare combination of three genetic disorders that also resulted in osteoporosis. When the youngest of the two brothers died just after surgery to correct his crossed eyes, they discovered that the boys also suffered from a form of Addison's disease. Through the years the Mertens have continued their interaction with Dr. McCabe and the medical team in an effort to help other families with similar conditions.
