Abstract
Physicians use medical technologies like ultrasound and amniocentesis to monitor the progress of the fetus during pregnancy. Ultrasound allows doctors to detect structural abnormalities, and estimate the age and position of the fetus. Amniocentesis involves removing some of the amniotic fluid that surrounds the fetus and checking cells within the fluid to see whether or not the fetus will be born with a genetic abnormality or other conditions such as neural defects.
