Abstract
Alcohol is an engrained part of our society. Fifty-two percent of Americans drink, many responsibly without threatening their health or relationships. In Europe, where the use of alcohol is part of the ritual of life it is uncommon to see adults drink to intoxication. Genetic and environmental factors, and certain personality traits are associated with increased risk for alcoholism. Jerry Rathner grew up in a Southern family in which alcohol was part of every activity Many relatives, including her grandfather, drank to the level of alcoholism, others did not.
