Abstract
Twelve-step programs such as the support offered by Alcoholics Anonymous is based on the idea that alcoholism is a disease for which there is no cure. The alcoholic takes responsibility for the things they did when they were drinking, makes amends for their behavior and goes beyond the drinking to live another life. The disease is still progressing. Even though Jerry Rathner has had a long period of sobriety, she would pick up where she left off should she decide to have a drink again.
