Abstract
Two genetic indicators may influence whether or not people are successful in their attempts to quit smoking: dopamine and serotonin transporters. Because the process of withdrawal is difficult, counselors often recommend that patients try the patch or an anti-depressant to help prevent the endless cycle of stopping and starting again. At whatever age a smoker quits, the risk of heart disease, lung-related diseases, and cancer begins to decrease. Not all the damage can be eliminated, but the health benefits are immense.
