Abstract
Health hazards can be introduced into the home in ways people don't anticipate as families in one Chicago neighborhood learned when an enterprising pest control service started using an agricultural chemical to destroy their household pests. When the chemical penetrated the skin and was absorbed into the bloodstream it resulted in flu-like symptoms: headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. EPA officials were concerned about long-term as well as immediate health effects, particularly for young children. Portions of homes had to be rebuilt; toys and furniture thrown away.
