Abstract
When weight loss attempts continue to fail and health problems continue to mount, extreme measures are sometimes initiated. One such measure is gastric bypass surgery, a procedure that diverts food from the stomach directly to the small intestine. Some success is also being achieved with pharmacologic approaches such as regulating neurotransmitters to suppress appetite. By studying people who have lost weight and maintained that loss for 5 years or more, researches are beginning to document factors that promote success.
