Abstract
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the agency responsible for monitoring the health status of the American people. In 1946, when troops were returning home from Europe and the Pacific after World War II, there were public health concerns about the potential resurgence of malaria, a disease that had been erased from the national scene for decades. Thus the center was located in Atlanta, Georgia, where malaria had been prevalent. For the first decades, the CDC concentrated on the eradication of infectious diseases like smallpox.
