Abstract
In order to stay a step ahead of the bugs, the CDC has started "The Unexplained Death Project" in several areas of the country. When clinicians believe a death is related to an infectious disease they cannot identify; they submit specimens for the CDC. The hanta virus, for example, a serious illness that kills 4 of every 10 of its victims, occurred so infrequently and in such disperse areas that no one picked it up. If such a program had been in place several decades ago, the virus would have been picked up before causing a major outbreak.
