Abstract
In record time, using technical means not available a few years earlier, scientists isolated and identified the virus they called HIV--Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The virus, which multiplies rapidly in the body, attaches itself to the T4 cell, the cell that regulates the body's defense system, and destroys it. Because it is a retro virus, it can also insert its genetic material into selected T4 cells, replicates within those cells and then goes on to attack additional immune cells. As the virus affects more and more T4 cells, the person begins to get ill, developing a serious infection that is an AIDS-defining illness.
