Abstract
More than 40 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and more than 20 percent will die from it. When we talk of cancer, we often refer to it as if it were a single disease, but in reality it is a general name for more than 100 diseases. What all cancers have in common is uncontrollable growth of cells that invade and destroy healthy tissue and spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph system. Only 5 to 10 percent of all cancers are thought to be inherited tendencies.
