Abstract
Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are still the principle forms of cancer treatment. During surgery, physicians remove a localized cancer, cutting it away from healthy tissue. Chemotherapy that destroys cancer cells or inhibits their ability to reproduce is used most often when cancer has spread to various regions of the body. Because of the toxicity of the drugs, patients may experience side effects. Radiation therapy targets cancerous tissue with concentrated doses of high-energy particles that kill the malignant cells and stop their spread. Cynthia Lauren, cancer survivor, shares her experience with each of these methods of treatment.
