Abstract
The Breast Cancer Prevention Trial, the first of its kind in the United States, was designed to see whether the drug tamoxifen prevents breast cancer in women who are at high risk of developing the disease. The 13,000 women who participated in the study were randomly assigned to receive tamoxifen or a placebo. Results showed that the drug did reduce the risk of breast cancer, although it did increase slightly the women's chances of developing three rare but life-threatening health problems, one of which was endometrial cancer.
