Abstract
Strokes are the second leading cause of cognitive loss late in life. A person's language and memory system may be compromised by a major stroke, or by a series of small strokes that gradually diminish a person's cognitive capacity. The leading cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, in which the person's specific brain chemistry causes problems in the neurons of the brain. In some instances loss of memory is the result of over-medication rather than stoke or Alzheimer's.
