Abstract
A century ago, most people spent their last hours of life at home surrounded by family and friends. More recent generations have experienced death in the hospital often shrouded in machines and tubes. For many people death is a subject they choose not to think about. By avoiding the issue or thinking what they might want, they die without providing their loved ones with an advanced directive about critical care and the prolongation of life. Only a minority of people have a will.
