Abstract
The complexity of the medical system in the United States is difficult for an outsider to understand, in part because there are so many options. From a practical point of view most people choose to enroll in a private or public health insurance plan. Many employers only offer plans that require a patient co-pay or enrollment in less expensive HMOs that tend to work well for patients who need routine services, but not for those who need cancer treatments or complicated surgeries. Doctors themselves find it difficult to subvert their role as physician to "managed care" provider. Author Peter Clark suggests a series of questions consumers should ask before selecting an insurance plan.
