Abstract
The insurance plan that is selected often influences the choice of a primary care physician who will provide periodic checkups, suggest preventive strategies, and respond when illness strikes. The primary care doctor recommends specialists when necessary, and is responsible for coordination as their patients navigate through the medical marketplace. Psychosocial as well as medical care is often needed, a fact that may not be recognized by insurance plans. Physicians admit their frustrations with rules and regulations that limit their ability to serve patients.
