Abstract
Dean Hamer, Director of the Gene Structure and Regulation Unit at the National Cancer Institute, expands on his discussion of harm avoidance, which he explains refers to a group of personality traits that includes depression, anxiety, feeling bad about one's self, and feeling bad generally. He then talks about the role of the brain chemical serotonin in those personality traits and the role of the gene for the serotonin transporter. Finally, Dr. Hamer explains that differences in DNA determine how well that gene works from one person to the next.
