Abstract
Plato's parable of the cave, written in the 4th century B.C.E., portrays how philosophy works. In the parable prisoners sit in the bottom of a cave, their heads chained so they can only see shadows cast by objects moving in front of a fire. We are like those prisoners in the cave, Socrates says, but we can do better as he illustrates when a prisoner is freed from his chains and forced into the full light of the sun. It is not an easy transition, nor is it for anyone who must scrutinize his surroundings for himself instead of relying on the reflections of others. If he is forced to return to the cave his new perceptions will be ridiculed by those in chains who have not shared his experience.
