Abstract
Socrates, accused of impiety, undermining faith in the traditional gods, and corrupting the youth of Athens, is tried before a jury of 500 Athenians. He describes how he became involved in philosophy and challenges Thrasymachus who claims that justice is whatever is in the interest of the rulers. He concludes his defense by vowing that he will not stop his questioning and not stop doing philosophy even if it means saving his own life. The jury votes 280 to 220 to convict Socrates. Even though he was held in loose confinement he refused to flee on principle, and when the time came drank the hemlock given to him and died.
