Abstract
In the 17th and 18th centuries, scientists are fascinated with collecting specimens and classifying species. However, It will be Charles Darwin who creates a new picture of nature. In the 1830s he travels to the Galapagos Islands to research both living species and fossils. As a result of his study he develops his theory of natural selection, or survival of the fittest. According to Darwin humans are not created by God or God's own image, but have evolved like the rest of the biological world. Those characteristics that allow a species to survive are those that evolve from generation to generation.
