Abstract
Descartes maintained that the entire universe consists of two substances, matter which exists in space and mind which has no spatial or physical properties. This doctrine becomes known as Cartesian dualism. Perhaps the hardest question for Cartesian dualism to answer is how mind and body can interact if they are separate and distinct substances. Descartes contends it is the pineal gland that allows the mind to work on the body. Even though few people accept Descartes' theory, the idea that there is a mind which is not physical appeals to some philosophers.
