Abstract
With the emergence of the science of psychology in the 20th century, it is believed that thoughts and feelings can be translated into objective units scientists can observe. One advocate, British philosopher Gilbert Ryle who wrote a famous put-down of Cartesian dualism, talks about multi-track dispositions. His behaviorist associates argue that everything we call a mental state is actually a behavior or disposition to behavior. Philosophers today point out problems with this behaviorist approach. The most obvious is that it seems to leave out the mind.
