Abstract
Some philosophers object to the idea that there is a spiritual reality different from the physical world as mere metaphysical speculation. As one group contends anything we cannot perceive with our senses or prove scientically should not be considered real. Another case against such speculation was offered by a group called the pragmatists in the late 19th, early 20th centuries. They defined reality in terms of practical consequences. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and survival of the fittest exerted a major influence on pragmatism.
